CONGO, CONTAINER SHIP BOARDED AT ANCHOR

Posn: 4.75 – 11.81

Thieves have stolen stores from a container ship at anchor off Congo.

They boarded the 1,100 TEU capacity MAERSK ROUBAIX while it was in the Pointe-Noire South Anchorage.

The alarm was raised in the early hours of October 20 when a duty officer noticed a mooring rope in the water.

The ship’s crew were mustered and the vessel searched. No intruders were found but the forward storeroom door was open and equipment was missing.

The incident was reported to the port authorities.

There were at least three occasions armed robbers boarded ships in the Pointe-Noire anchorages in 2018 but this was the first incident reported to the International Maritime Bureau’s (IMB) Piracy Reporting Centre in 2019.

Ships in the Pointe-Noire Anchorage should be vigilant and maintain strict watches, especially at night.
